Semper Mine

A STANDALONE novel in the Sons of War contemporary military romance series …

“A freak accident landed both of the Khavalov twins under my command, just before a routine mission turned into a nightmare. I brought home one twin in a coffin and the other in a coma missing his leg. I did everything right – and still people died. I can’t forget that night or how many lives it changed, including mine.

It’s natural for their sister, Katya, to blame me. I made one decision in the middle of a firefight, and it shattered her sheltered world. I’m the ice to her fire, and when we first meet, it’s not pretty. I don’t fear war or death, and I am definitely not going to let a beautiful woman with a quick temper and broken heart scare me off, either. I know she’s hurting, and I’m determined to make sure she’s okay. It’s the least I can do for the twins.

I may have failed them that night, but I won’t fail her. What I’m not counting on: the feelings she ignites within me.” – Captain Sawyer Mathis

Peaked and then Disappointed
By (3.0 out of 5 stars) June 22, 2015
3.5 Stars - I wanted to be able to give this a higher review but I could not, due to the fact that I felt towards the end, the story felt rushed and I felt that it did not do the hero and heroine justice.Parts that I wanted more details to were left hanging, such as when he encounters his female military counterpart and makes his decision to take her up on her offer. Some love scenes we're just not well developed at all and that was very disappointing. The scene in the sleeping bag was much better then there real encounter.Captain Sawyer Mathis and Katya Khavalo seem to make the pages sizzle, but unfortunately it fizzled out for me. The plot to the story was excellent and it felt like it was developing at a great pace but again towards the end it felt like the time was not taken to fully developed the story towards the end.Sawyer has just lost four men. Of these four men one of them was a twin. He had the twins in his platoon. One dies and the other has a severe injury to overcome. He attends the funeral of the twin who died and comes across the little sister, who is a beautiful woman. Katya received him with a slap to the face. Then within a short period of time they are forced to be paired up at a kids camp in memory of her brother.I am going to read the next story in the series and I'm hoping the development issue and the love scenes or more developed.

Military man meets sister of the man who died under his command; later they have to help each other run a kid's summer camp...

Semper Mine by Lizzy Ford is a story about enemies to lovers, where both partners have deep wounds that caused them to develope coping mechanisms to hide their real psyche.Marine Corp Captain Sawyer Mathis returned to the US to attend the funeral of Mikael, who lost his life on a mission he headed. That man's brother Pyotr lost a leg on the same mission. He also met Katya, the sister to both, and Katya only saw red, for Sawyer is the man that brought one of her brothers back in a box and other in pieces. Sawyer endured, and put her out of his mind. Months later, Sawyer and his team were back in the US, to help run a special summer camp for children who had lost parents... and found he had been paired with Katya. But as they learned to tolerate each other, they found that each has deep dark demons and gained each other's respect. But what they were not ready for... were feelings of love.Surprisingly emotional, you get to learn reasons for each of their coping mechanisms. Sawyer's mom ran off, and dad died young, leaving an uncle who doesn't believe in love and a fist is the only way to teach. The military became his refuge, where he buried himself in work to not feel. Katya had suffered major burns on her back in the fire that took her mother, that she felt ashamed to show her body. She also felt like she had to be the mom of the family, to the point of smothering, not trusting anyone to make any decision, and so self-reliant it bordered on reckless. Katya saw Sawyer as a heartless military machine, not seeing the empathy and nightmares he only unleashed in private, while Sawyer only saw Katya as the rebellious and reckless girl he should never get close to ("I no good for you"). It feels a little uneven, IMHO.

Good Read

I received this free e-book from Amazon and I am voluntarily writing a review. Katya is the sister of twins that end up in a special ops unit in Iraq. One is killed and one comes back without his leg and in a coma. sawyer is the officer in charge of her brothers unit and she blames him for what has happened to her brothers. This is a great read that deals with survivors guilt and the grief and loss of the survivors both family and friends.

Will she ever not blame him for her brother's death?

Katya blamed Sawyer for the death of Mikael and that Petr was fighting for his life. Which she showed Sawyer with both her tongue and a slap across his face. Sawyer was asked back to help chaperone a camp that was in Mikael's honor. He was paired with Katya to keep track of six kids.Ms Ford does a very good job of bringing her characters to life. It felt like I had just started when it was done. I would recommend this story.

Semper Mine by Lizzy Ford is an amazing, heroic love story. These characters, and this story line, will break your heart. Over, and over, and over. And then the sun will shine. It's tough, but there is a well deserved HEA

Katya is young, headstrong and angry. Angry that the war has taken one of her brothers. Angry that the one man who was in charge of keeping him safe, failed to bring him home.Sawyer is that man, angry with himself for not keeping his squad safe. Frustrated that this family that all should hate him has welcomed him into the family, well with the exception of Katya.I have always been a die hard Lizzy Ford fan but I am struggling to love this contemporary story. I am not sure if it was the narrator in the audio that just left me wanting to choke the breath out of Katya or punch her in the throat every time she threw a jab at Sawyer. You could tell from the very beginning of the story that Sawyer was genuine and that he harbored a ton of guilt. The book gives you your HEA but this one was just okay for me.

Learning To Forgive

This series must be read in order. This is the first book. I can't wait to read Soldier Mine next!Sawyer is a career Marine. Has been since he was set straight by a Marine at 16. Being an orphan since the age of two has not prepared him well for dealing with the surviving members of the Khavalov family after the tragedy of his first command. Bringing one brother home severely injured and the other dead fills him with immeasurable guilt. He is not even all that shocked when the sister slaps him. Will he ever forgive himself for this tragedy? Should he? How will he be able to go on with this looming over him?Katya is a spoiled tyrant. She has devoted her life to caring for her twin older brothers and her father ever since her mother died. Losing Mikael has devastated her completely and she blames Sawyer because he was in command. Getting Petr back in a coma and without a leg didn't help either. She just wants to keep what is left of her family safe. Will she be able to move past the fear and anger? Why is she so attracted to Sawyer when she hates him so much? Will their family ever be able to move past this tragedy and heal?***This series is suitable for adult readers who enjoy a little tragedy in their uplifting and heartwarming contemporary military romances with a lot of snark and tons of soul searching :)•••Obtained from the AWESOME IndieArc in exchange for an unbiased and honest review•••
